A quick cleanup of an old Ammo Box

I decided to buy a box.  A fairly sizeable box covered in about 5 layers of paint, grime and age.

It had been int he back of a decorators van for the last 20 years or so, and before that, who knows.

I had big plans for getting it back to exactly what it should have looked like, but my lovely daughter decided she wanted it to put her toys in.

I wanted to first off remove all of the hardware and metalwork.  Unfortunately this was seriously not going to happen without damaging the box.

Instead i started with a chemical based paint and varnish stripper to take it down to just wood and bare metal.

This did a good job, but required 3 applications to get through all the layers.

The last layer before undercoat showed some lettering, but i couldn’t make out complete words.

After clearing the paint off, i went to town on the loose and damaged bits of the wood.

Clamped and glued to because the box was falling apart slightly at the corner joins. I also filled any larger and annoying holes.

After taking down to the undercoat, checking the wood and removing the rope handles, it started to look ok.

a Grey Primer coat was applied to the box for the colour to really pop out.

2 passes with the meadow green paint and it’s looks pretty much ready to go.

I would have went with a more military, darker green, but it is now for my daughters room, so needed more brightness i think.  To me it is the difference between Ocean Grey and Battleship Grey.

I had some leftover black ‘rust repellent’ metal paint left over from another job.

This did a perfect job of making the metalwork pop.

One question now to finish this is, give the inside a quick sand and a natural finish, or go crazy with a war themed decoupage?  Ill put a quick poll on facebook or instagram to see what you think.
