Along with a video which I will link to at the bottom, this is a rundown of the handlewrap i completed for my little utility knife.
The knife was a little project before I started blogging, made from an old rusty damaged file. Cleaned it, and ground it down to where it is now. It has a nice enough edge on it, good for general jobs and marking out lines. Further builds will be documented a lot better.
The Wrap
The wrap uses some Paracord i bought online. Nothing spectacular as I didn’t really know how this was going to turn out, or how much I would use. I think after this experience i will be using it a lot more in some other projects.
This is the cord i used
Available in a huge amount of colours, and 100 metres for a tenner, enough to keep me going for a while. I would suggest this if your just starting out like me.
To start i ran about 1.5metres of cord from about 2 inches down the blade, and looped it about an inch over the top of the handle end.
bring it back down to to the start of the handle, and then start wrapping.
Make a Loop at the top, go under the item your wrapping and back up through the loop. Tighten as much as you can.
When tight, start the next one. This time loop over the item, then underneath and back through the loop. Tighten.
Keep doing this alternating the knots to give you a nice pattern underneath
When you have gone as far as you can put the cord through the first loop you made at the top of the knife handle.
You’ll now need to pull on the cord that was left right at the start to trail down the blade side.
Pull it right through as much as you can, usually about 3 quarters down. If you want at this point you can cut and burn the ends and you are all done. I wanted to have a wrist loop as well so with the remaining cord at the bottom of the handle I pulled it back up and wrapped it around five times round.
It is probably best to watch the video as this will give a much better visual explanation of the process.
Either way your finished product should look something like this.
Just make sure each knot is tightly pushed up to the next one and all the way around.
The Video.
I do love making things, then improving what i make. Learning is an ongoing process, and improvement, i feel naturally happens.
